Assists Dentist in providing oral health care to patients


  1. Patient Assessment

Takes history, vital signs and chief complaint for use in patient assessment

Records patient allergies and medication incompatibilities

Performs x-ray as directed by physician and inserts in medical records

Willingly helps others in a pleasant and professional manner

  1. Patient Treatment

Assists dentist with patient procedures

Assists dentist with scheduling and referral procedures

Ensures that all instruments are clean and sterilized with every patient procedure

Maintains all medical equipment in good working order

Orders medical supplies appropriately

Assists in other areas of clinic as needed

Ensures that patient treatment area is clean, neat and organized before and after patient visit

Uses heat sterilization techniques

  1. Information Management

Verifies information accurately and appropriately transmits or records in patient record

Distributes appropriate information to patients in a clear and concise manner

Maintains chart order when filing test results in patient record

Provides patient management, seating, comfort, set-up and paperwork associated with patient

Alerts dentist of present/potential problems

  1. Communication

Calls attention of physician to special needs of patient

Answer patient questions and conflicts within scope of knowledge. Willingly seek others to handle questions outside their scope of knowledge, referring other problems to those in authority

Screens incoming calls; return patient calls in a timely manner

  1. Stewardship

Maintains strict confidentiality and care with reports, charts and patient information

Ensures that all safety and regulatory standards are met

Effective in personal time management



Education: Successful completion of approved dental assistant course including certificate of qualification to perform oral x-rays, nitrous oxide and polishing teeth.

Experience: One (1) year dental office or related experience

Physical Requirements: This job requires, at various times, the following physical activities; climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, carrying, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing, sometimes exerting in excess of 20-100 pounds of force. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform daily activities. May be subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (including electrical currents and exposure to high heat and chemicals), infectious diseases, and may be required to function around prisoners and mental patients.

Skills: Must display strong interpersonal skills. Must exhibit willingness to assist in all activities before, during and after patient visit/procedure. Must display excellent communication skills, both oral and written. CPR Certification required.

PRIMARY CUSTOMERS: Patients, families, physicians, employees, vendors and the public.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS : Team Leader, Clinic Manager/Director, and Dentist

Incumbent has access to restricted or confidential patient or other highly sensitive business information and must comply with the terms of SVHS/CHI Policies as they apply to their job role.
